Crown Infrastructure Partner support for the Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa Development

Today’s announcement of Crown Infrastructure Partner (CIP) support for the Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa Development is a significant moment for the Pukeroa Oruawhata Group and our city.

The impact of Covid-19 on our group position meant that we were looking at having to defer the project for at least two years. Now with CIP support, the commencement of construction on our already prepared lakefront site is expected to start within the next two to three months.
Our vision is for the re-establishment of Rotorua as the spa capital of the Southern Hemisphere, building on the city’s long-standing reputation for use of the natural geothermal resource in delivery of health & wellness outcomes.

We had always forecast that the Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa would have a very strong domestic clientele, being based within a 3 hour drive from 55% of our national population. We do have some international clients in our plans, mainly FIT, and with the spa facility coming to market in early 2022 we aim to capture international visitors to New Zealand.

The Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa’s coming to market will support the city’s positioning of being an all seasons, all weather “short break” visitor destination, an outcome that supports Rotorua’s wider retail, hospitality, accommodation, and tourism attraction sectors which will bring significant benefits to the city – initially with 230-280 design and construction related jobs starting this year, and up to 180 permanent new jobs when the facility is operational at full capacity.

Training for the new spa jobs is now a priority. Toi Ohomai, who have developed a level-5 qualification in Spa Therapy, have been actively involved in developing a pathway to support those who are looking to equip themselves with the necessary qualifications required for careers in the spa industry.

Once we have confirmed appointment of the contractor for the build we will be working with them on their recruitment strategy. Updates will be posted on this website and other social media with contact details for job opportunities.
